What Is HEPA Filter Support Mesh?
HEPA filter support mesh is a rigid, open-structure metal mesh layer placed behind or around a HEPA or ULPA filter media pack. It provides the structural backbone that keeps the filter media flat and properly supported under airflow pressure, while allowing air to pass through with minimal resistance.
Why Expanded Metal Is Used in HEPA & ULPA Filters
Expanded metal is formed by slitting and stretching a solid sheet — not welding or perforating — which means there are no loose joints or drilled-out material to shed. This gives HEPA and ULPA support mesh three advantages over other mesh types:
- Consistent, uniform open area across the full sheet, for even airflow
- High structural rigidity with minimal material weight
- No welds or seams that can loosen or corrode over the filter's service life
